Follow Our Progress

September 25th 2003
Becky and I were a bit hung over today. We invited our friends
Dave and Ellen over to hang out for the evening and everyone ended up
enjoying themselves way too much, so this morning did not start out at
the usual pace... We went out for a big breakfast and it took
until around noon for me to feel like working on anything.
 |
We stopped by the bus and picked up some tools so we could
remove more items from the donor trailer.
We managed to get quite a few things considering that neither
Becky nor I had much energy.
We took all of the cabinet doors and drawers in hopes that we
can use most (if not all) of them in the bus. The hinges,
latches and door guides are pretty expensive to buy. I
also know how long it can take to build cabinet doors and
drawers from scratch, so we're thinking that we'll just sand
them smooth and paint over the wood that's there already.

I dropped Becky and Emily off at the house. Becky was done
for the day (I couldn't blame her), and Erika was due home in
about 1/2 hour, so I headed off to the bus to drop off all of
the parts that we had scavenged from the donor trailer.
One of the items that we hadn't been too sure of was a table
in the trailer. We ended up finding 2 extra leaf sections
that make the table right around 4 feet long. We're not
happy with the fake wood laminate, but the it seems to be in
good enough shape to warrant some restoration and a new surface
or something.
I think we'll end up using it across from the kitchen
counters. I was going to build something from scratch, but
I can't pass up the opportunity to build off of something that
already works.

It took me about an hour to unload and stow away
everything that we had loaded into the Jeep. As you can
see, we will be saving quite a bit of time if we can reuse even
3/4 of the doors or drawers.

I had been thinking about the bathroom door yesterday, so I went
ahead and pulled the pocket door from the trailer thinking that
I might be able to use it for the bathroom door in the bus.
As it turns out, the pocket door fits PERFECTLY. The
door is 21.5 inches wide. the space that I have to work
with is 43 inches wide. The door will slide right next to
the cabinets in the bathroom and not hang out into the doorway
at all. With a bit of trim around the door, there will be
no gap when the door is closed either.
I grabbed all of the hardware for the pocket door, so as soon
as the paneling in the bathroom is up, I can hang the door and
other than a quick sanding and paint job, it will be finished.

I didn't get any farther on putting up the wall framing or paneling
the inside of the bus, but I do have a good feeling about the cabinet
doors and drawers, so that has left me feeling like we got quite a bit
done again today. |
