Follow Our Progress

November 2nd 2003

We're off to a good start today.  The weather is miserable though.  It's been raining and our high temperature for the day so far is 42 degrees.

Our first order of business is to get some heat in the bus...

We have a forced air gas heater that came out of the trailer.  Unfortunately, the trailer's gas tanks were an older style that Oregon gas stations can no longer legally fill.  They were also a bit small and would have required a refill quite often I think.

I found some 7 gallon gas tanks at the local Bi-Mart for $40.00 each.  It cost about $25.00 more to have them both purged and filled up.

We dropped off the new tanks and took the regulator and section of pipe in to the home improvement store to get the rest of the supplies we need to hook up the tanks to the heater and other appliances as they go into their permanent locations.

We came out of there with $51.00 worth of supplies.  I couldn't remember if I still had the right kind of pipe cutter (and I know I've never owned a flaring tool) so some of the expense was to get the  tools to do the job.

We were not able to find the fitting that goes into the regulator except for in a $30.00 quick connection kit, so we still have one critical piece to find before we'll be able to hook everything up.  Today being Sunday, the places we are likely to find the right fitting at are all closed.

If I can't find the right fitting on Tuesday, we'll buy a new regulator.  The one from the trailer looks pretty corroded anyway...

We're also going to need a power source.  The 12V battery we pulled out from the trailer will not charge correctly, so I think it might be toast.  I'm going to try to use it for testing, but before we get any real use from the forced air heater, we're going to have to get a new battery (or a couple of them if we go with 6V).

Tomorrow the Jeep goes in for a clutch-ectomy, so we'll be without wheels for the whole day at least.  The shop said that they could get the job done in one day, so we should be able to finish our shopping and get some work done on Tuesday afternoon.  By Wednesday I will be able to go back to work on the bus full time again.
