Follow Our Progress

November 20th 2003

Becky and I managed to get a few things accomplished today.

It's been raining (and even snowing a little) this week.  With the whole family just getting over colds and our need to cut some large plywood panels, we decided to make a covered area in front of the bus so that we could have a dry place to work.

I used some of the aluminum from the old bus luggage racks as poles and stapled the other side to the fence.  It worked really well.

Becky took advantage of the dry work area.  She secretly has been wanting to play with the Sawzall I think.  She just wanted to practice on something other than the bus, so she cut up a big stack of scrap wood that we picked up from one of the local factories and made it into kindling for the wood stove.

I have a feeling that the Sawzall will get a lot more use now that Becky has had some time to play around with it.

I spent quite a bit of time under the bus working to extend the drain line from the black water tank...  I actually spent so much time under the bus that I couldn't get back out from under it.  The air bags deflated so much that Becky had to start the bus with me under it to re-inflate the air bags enough so I could crawl out.

Not only is it a bit cramped under the bus, but being under the section with the Black water tank that is not yet vented properly was not something I care to repeat.  It was a horrible job.  There's nothing good I have to say about working on the black water tank.

I found out that "flushable wipes" do not break down in the tank like toilet paper does.  They were all clogging the tank (and make a great dam by the way...  We had a quick discussion with the girls and all of us agreed not to flush them at the bus anymore.

I did get the drain pipe extended (note the clean section of pipe between the gate valve and the black water tank).  I recommend to anyone converting a bus to get the black water tank and toilet assembly completely finished before using it.  It is not a job for the squeamish once it has been used...  Enough said.

I got some work done on the gray water waste lines too.  I made a decision to move the gray water drain/vent to the bathroom side of the wall.  The black water tank vent will be in the same general area and after getting a really good look at the location of the tanks again, I think that this location will make the work of concealing the pipes a bit easier.

Everything has been dry fitted for now.  The bathtub connection still needs to have a "P" trap installed and will actually connect to the main stack under the bus floor instead of at the floor as it is right now.  I didn't have the energy to go back under the bus today to finish that part of the plumbing, so that is an item I will need to come back to relatively soon.

I did a very small amount of work on the last few electrical boxes that will service the computer and entertainment center area.

I need to run some speaker wire, video cable and some phone wire too before we finish up the insulation and paneling.

I still have not decided if I want to vent the refrigerator out the side of the bus or construct a channel to vent it out the roof.  The roof is very curved near the walls and I am a little concerned that a roof vent will look goofy unless I use up most of the upper cabinet to move the vent toward the center of the bus where it will be a bit more level.

I've done some research on the venting arrangement for the Dometic and I think I can adequately vent it out the side, so I am leaning toward a side vent at the moment...
