Follow Our Progress

December 5th 2003

Becky and I started out today with a big clean up effort...  We have a lot of stuff to haul off to the dump.

We have been using the trailer as a place to store scraps of wood, insulation and 1x2's.  The wood paneling pieces, 2x2's and MDF had piled up quite a bit so we decided to cut it up and start burning it.

It took quite a while to empty the trailer.  Becky worked on getting the trailer unloaded while I worked with the saws to cut it all into pieces that would fit into the wood stove.

The MDF is not pleasant to burn and smells horrible...  I think it has been causing us some headaches too.  We're planning to haul the remainder of that to the dump.

There is still a lot of scrap left over from the bus stripping.  Becky got quite a bit of the pieces that we don't have any use for loaded up into the trailer on top of the bags of garbage that have built up.

Some of the scrap metal I think we can use to finish off the interior of the bus.  Becky and I plan to use the old aluminum window rails as wall molding along the floor to tie in the aluminum strip that runs down the center.  I would also like to use some of the aluminum rods that were part of the luggage rack for storage shelves...  That may or may not work out...

Once we had a good chunk of the cleaning done, we moved on to working on the countertops in the kitchen.

We created a framework of 1x2's to support the countertop.  For now we put a few supports here and there to hold things up until we have the supplies to build the bottom shelf (and kicker) for the whole cabinet.

Here's a view of the new countertop from the living area.  The stove slides right into the space that we cut out for it.

I have the laminate to cover the kitchen countertop, but we ran out of time.

Here's another shot of the stove and refrigerator looking from the hallway.  The stove is not hooked up yet.  It's just sitting in it's new home so we could see how it fits with everything else.

I think it looks pretty good.

Working with the rounded side walls of the bus has been a challenge.  The stove/oven combination was a real trick to figure out so that the vent would line up and come out under where the ceiling and side wall meet.  We managed to get all of the measurements right so far...

Tomorrow I would love to glue the laminate in place and finish building the rest of the kitchen cabinets.  If we can get the kitchen sink installed tomorrow that would be very exciting.  Things will look so much better once everything is primed and ready for final painting too.
