Follow Our Progress

December 23rd 2003

I think that we got more work done today than we have in the past 2 weeks.  Becky and I are dedicated to getting the bus ready for the trip to Quartzite and today it was obvious that we're going to make it.

When you make a decision to get something done, it's funny how fear kind of takes a back seat....

I had to cut a hole in the bus big enough to fit the two propane tanks through easily but I didn't want to end up with an ugly RV door covering the hole, so I decided to cut the hole so that I could use the section that I cut out as the door as well...

I made some careful measurements and checked several times to make sure that both the outside of the hole and the piece left over would have enough strength to make a quality door.

I used the grinder with a cutoff wheel to cut a slot big enough to slip both the jigsaw and Sawzall blades through.  I made 3 slots - one on top and one on each side.

By rounding the bottom corners of the door I was able to match the factory doors and make one cut all the way from the top corner around the bottom and back up the other side.

The door will hinge at the top edge where I made sure that I left at least a double thickness of the bus siding.

Once I had a hole big enough to work with, Becky helped me fabricate some supports for the underside of the bus.

The supports will allow us to mount the fresh water tank and propane tanks under the bus.

I spent a couple of hours this evening under the bus drilling and bolting the new supports in place.

It was after dark by the time I had most of them in...

Here's a shot with the flash on the camera turned on and the shop light better positioned.

There's only about 20 or so inches of space between the floor of the bus and the bottom of the siding.  Sitting on the ground there's only about 28 inches of room to move around.

I would not make a very good contortionist.  It took me forever to get everything set up so that I could just scoot backwards and work on each support as I went along.  My neck still hurts...

The final result is an almost completed support structure for the floor of our new water tank and propane storage bay.

Looks pretty darn good I think!

We managed another major score this afternoon...

One of the neighbors was remodeling his house and was replacing his carpet.  I asked if he would mind if we took a couple of large sections off of his hands and viola!

We later discovered that it has kind of a pink tone to it...  I hate pink, but you can't beat the price.

We'll throw our steam cleaner on it and it will certainly do for our trip to Quartzite.

Becky went to work cutting out a piece of carpet for the kids bedroom while I used up another tube of sealant on all of the interior wall seams.

I don't want any rattles or squeaks and sealing up the walls on the bus sides has dramatically reduced the drafts.

Just look at that beautiful....  pink... carpet... <sigh> At least it looks kind of like a light tan in the picture...

We still will have to seal up the floor and get some padding, but it was nice to have the girls so excited that they could finally take off their shoes in their room and run around.

Tomorrow I have to get supplies to make a few more supports before everything is closed for Christmas.  We'll be spending Christmas at home and relaxing for a couple of days...

Happy Holidays!
