Follow Our Progress

April 3rd 2004

Living here in the desert is quite a trip.  When it rains it pours and everything becomes a muddy, wet mess.  The ground doesn't absorb hardly any of the water and it makes huge puddles everywhere.  Just as amazing is how fast the water disappears.  When the sun comes out, everything evaporates so quickly that it forms a ground fog...

It's been raining off and on all day today.  The weather forecast calls for more scattered showers until Tuesday.

It's a little hard to see here, but this whole field is pretty much a swamp at this point.

To get in and out of the bus was proving to be a challenge because of the mud, so we put down some scrap carpet pad to minimize the mud.  We still had to hose our shoes off each time we entered the bus to prevent ruining the brand new carpet.

The dog has proven to be the biggest challenge.  She needs to go out pretty regularly, so keeping on top of de-mudding her is a new chore.

A shot of the driveway, full of puddles.  We are just amazed at the amount of water standing.  The soil is full of clay, so once it gets wet it gets pretty mucky.

It looks fairly dry on top, but you can step in a spot and lose your shoe pretty easily.

We decided to get out of the bus and take a trip into town for some beer and a movie or something...

The dirt road filled the treads on our tires, and we managed to flick mud up onto the roof of the jeep.  The road is a mess and even in four wheel drive it's a slippery trip.

The weather report says that it's going to keep raining for a few more days, but I think that we're on the tail end of the storm and going to get some good sun shortly.

We can't complain about the mud too much.  We're getting free rent, so for what we are paying, we've got it really good.  It's nice not having any bills to pay...
